@Title:Roman History:The Emperors &the Empire (individual research)
1.(Purpose/Contents)
The aim of this course is to serve as an introduction to the political,military,economic and social history of the Roman Empire.Covering more than two centuries of history,and a wide geographical area,stretching from the Atlantic to Arabia,the course aims to provide students with an essential base for the understanding of subsequent periods in European and Middle Eastern History.Using a variety of materials,we shall examine Roman and native society, both in Italy and in the provinces during the first two centuries A.D.There will be ample opportunity to discuss the primary sources,and also to examine various historical perspective on the period.
We use English as the medium of discussion, and class work will be conducted using English. Reading matter will be set in both Japanese and English,and students are expected to put considerable effort into mastering the basics of the subject,so that we can reach a higher level of discussion in class.
Students who enrol on this course need to be both organized and committed.They should be prepared to put in research outside the classroom, and to work independently.Active participation in class discussion,and the preparation of several reports and essays will be expected.Both written and spoken work should be prepared to a high standard,and be supported by individual research.
Students who lack confidence,who lack the desire to work,or who have only a passing interest in this area are NOT recommended to attend.
