- Topic
In this class we shall be looking at developing countries and we shall try to find out how best we can help these countries to progress. During the first term we shall work on Asian and South American countries and in the second term on African countries.
- Classwork
Classwork will be done in groups. Each group will have 3-4 members that will discuss problems, exchange views and prepaer presentations. An important part of the learning process in this class is listening and commenting on the work of other groups. This will give students information about countries that they have not been studying and show them other ways in which to conduct presentations.
- Presentations
Each group will have to give a number of presentations. Presentations will be divided into giving the facts, and presenting the students' own views, ideas and conclusions.
- Poster presentations and papers
Each group will put up a poster and present a project that will show how the group can help a small community in the country that they have chosen. There will be one poster presentation at the end of each term. After that each group will write up their description of the country and their project and submit it as a paper.
- Evaluation
Evaluation will be based on:
- attendance: students in this course must attend regularly.
- Work in class: students who are active in class, who use a lot of English will gain points. Students who do nothing or speak Japanese will lose points.
- Presentations: Good presentations are in the student's own English and are explanations of what the student knows, not memorisations of some text.
- Posters and papers. The poster presentations and papers of each group will be evaluated.
